Power Lines. Dangerous or Just Ugly? Let me just say that I've always avoided homes with power lines close by. But 6 years ago my wife and I found a beautiful home that we loved. It had power lines that ran over the adjacent lot. Three of the four lots around us were vacant due to a Georgia Power easement. This made this home very private in a neighborhood of small lots. But we were just married and wanted to have kids. My first thought was to just pass it by. But my wife didn't seem to mind about the power lines and wanted the house. So to convince her of the danger, I tried to find the conclusive studies I heard about in the press. I tried but I really couldn't find compelling evidence of any danger. A study came out in 1979 that showed a correlation of childhood leukemia and power lines. This is what started all the hoopla in the press. I'm a scientist by training and know that before you can say something causes an effect you must be able to reproduce it in a controlled study or experiment. Since this initial study, no one has been able to do this. They've also shown that the initial study was flawed in many ways and a correlation can not be made. I've done much reading on the subject and can not find any evidence to support the danger of power lines. Still, some say that it's a conspiracy of the government to keep this information covered up. You decide. We now have 2 perfectly normal children and have enjoyed our house with it's extra privacy for the last four years. But research the subject yourself. I've provided some links to help you get started. The last link has more information than you'll ever want to know about electromagetic fields. July 2, 1997 BETHESDA, Maryland (CNN) -- Children exposed to electromagnetic fields by living near electrical power lines are not more susceptible to developing leukemia, a study released Wednesday shows. www.cnn.com/HEALTH/9707/02/nfm.power.lines/ Power
Lines and Cancer Summary: As you may have seen the other day, a large study in the United States has failed to find any link between childhood leukaemia and living near to power lines or having high electricity-induced magnetic fields in your home. It may put the nail in the lid of one of the longest running environmental scares of the last few decades. www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/8.30/helthrpt/stories/s175.htm Power Lines and Cancer:
